Participation
This is a frustrated Anshuman for u...I wrote this in my second year at kgp...
“Participation matters; winning is just a matter of luck!” This is a cliché or a very commonly used phrase. You must have, and I am sure of it, heard it in almost every event.
Whenever the “judge” is requested to announce the names of the winners, he, inadvertently, quotes this phrase and how can you forget those innumerable quizmasters who always seem to be obsessed with this cliché…it appears to me that they are actually thanking those participants who wasted their time just sitting through the quiz while his inaudible and illogical questions just passed over their heads.
Well, I have always participated in every single soc-n-cult event that I have ever come across in my second year. Be it JAM (which I had never heard of before and actually mistook it for a quiz on Jamshedpur!) or Dumb Charade (which my imagination told me was actually “Dumb Shell Art”!!), I participated…and I lost. Well I can’t say I lost, rather somebody else won. It’s only a matter of luck; and luck happened to misjudge the right candidate.
When our O.P. was on… (Am I right to divulge this info that our O.P. did occur??), we had innumerable fresher events and as you must have guessed by now, I participated in all of them. Now again don’t bother yourself by asking whether I won. Don’t you know the answer by yourself? During O.P. they… (I mean, my seniors) kept telling us, “This is the place for you to improve your personality. And this can be done only by participating in events and exposing yourself.” I followed their advice. Every Open IIT Soc-n-Cult event, which occurred and as well as those which did not, saw my participation. Again do you need a reminder that I didn’t win? But as it goes…Participation matters.
Am I boring you? If I am then please pardon me and move onto the next article. For those who still wish to carry on let me now pick out few specific instances and then you will see how stronger my case is.
When I participated in Hindi Elocution, I spoke and people said I spoke well…they went to the extent of saying that I deserve a prize. Ha! How can I get a prize, I asked myself. Wait…let this not give you an impression that I had never before spoken well…actually I spoke like the usual days, but people said this seemed to be better. The results came and went and I stood the test of time, I had managed to continue the tradition…yes, I didn’t win. They said actually you were left out because of “politics”…because Soc-n-Cult G. Sec. himself participated and he had to be given one or the other prize so you know…yes, I knew!!
For Hindi Creative Writing, I wrote and most of the people didn’t understand the hidden meaning. This is yet another problem with genius; contemporary society fails to understand you. Well that’s yet another topic, I will write about it some other time. Well I gather these proofs are enough, aren’t they?
But don’t think that all these participations have not yielded any rewards. Actually I have very recently received the very coveted title of “the jobless fellow” because of participations. The title is ironic, isn’t it? Very well then, nothing could ever hinder my tempo and nothing ever will. I am reminded of the poem
“We shall overcome, we shall overcome, Someday!
Oho, deep in my heart, I do believe…
We shall overcome, we shall overcome, Someday!”
I wanted to go on and on this topic, but I will stop now because you know Open IIT English Elocution is scheduled on 14th and I have to prepare for it…prepare for participation!!
